Shropshire Challenge 2013 charity cycle ride this Sunday
Shropshire Council’s Travel Shropshire and Urban Bikes UK are running a fundraising cycle ride on Sunday 9 June 2013 in aid of Omega Chatterbox, an expanding telephone befriending service, supporting socially isolated people throughout the West Midlands.
Taking place ahead of National Bike Week (15-23 June), this gentle 30-mile ride will follow a circular route out from Shrewsbury through quiet lanes and rolling countryside, and will led by Shropshire Council and Urban Bikes UK ride leaders.
Riders should assemble at 9.45am ready for a 10am set off at the Old Market Hall Square, Shrewsbury. Entry is £5, with proceeds going to Omega Chatterbox; children under 16 go free, but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Participants can make use of a free bike check service before setting off, and should bring their own refreshments.
Regular rest stops will make sure no one gets left behind, and the ride is expected to finish around 2.30pm.
To confirm your interest or find out more, email: ray.hughes@shropshire.gov.uk or call 01743 253063. Alternatively we’ll see you on the day. You can view route details online at www.travelshropshire.co.uk/cycle.
Travel Shropshire are delighted to support Phil Roe of Urban Bikes, who has taken a Cycle Ride Leader training course led by Shropshire Council. The aim is to train volunteers to lead community-based cycle rides. Phil Roe also supports Travel Shropshire with delivering free basic cycle maintenance courses at his Market Hall cycle shop, providing both new and more experienced cyclists with an introduction to looking after your bike and undertaking repairs such as repairing a puncture and adjusting brakes.

Beneficiaries of the Chatterbox telephone befriending service, managed by Shrewsbury-based charity Omega Care for life, receive confidential one to one support from carefully selected volunteers. The service is aimed at family carers, former carers, the bereaved, the socially isolated and people at risk of becoming socially isolated, especially the frail-elderly.
The flexible service offers companionship and information to anyone who feels lonely in their own home.
Omega Development Director Tom Memery expressed his thanks to Phil Roe of Urban Bikes, Dilwyn Owen, Ray Hughes, Travel Shropshire and enthusiastic local cyclists for helping us to share the caring.
