Shropshire Local Flood Risk Management Strategy
Shropshire Council has just made its Local Flood Risk Management Strategy available for public consultation. Working collaboratively with Staffordshire County Council, which shares similar flooding issues to Shropshire, the council has developed a strategy to help better manage local flood risk.
By working together, both councils can make the most of their resources. The new strategy sets out which organisations are responsible for managing flood risk, how they are co-ordinated and how the risks will be managed.
In the coming months, it is anticipated that the council will also become responsible for approving and adopting sustainable drainage systems for all new development in a similar way to which it currently approves planning applications.
Mal Price, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for flood management, said:
“Many communities across Shropshire are affected by flooding from a variety of sources. As part of our work under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, we have produced our strategy to set the direction for the management of flood risk in to the future. By working with Staffordshire County Council we can use our resources as effectively as possible and share expertise. Our aim is to give people better insight into preventing flooding, and alleviating problems by working with the people or organisations that may be responsible. The new legislation will also mean we will have better infrastructure where there is new development.”
